Culinary: Soylent….an introduction

You may have heard of this stuff. It’s called Soylent and while there’s only a trace amount of soy in the powder, the tech world is sort of blowing up in what’s a 50/50 split of fans and foes to this new liquid diet.

I just ordered 28 days worth of food for $300.

What is Soylent? via SoylentMaker.com:

So, what is Soylent? In short, Soylent is intended to become a drink or shake that contains all the nutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates and other macro and micronutrients) that the human body needs to sustain itself in a healthy manner. Most of the time, our normal diets just aren’t getting us the right amount of nutrients and that can have a tremendous impact on our daily lives (mentally and physically).

For example, a lack in potassium or choline (both important nutrients in neurological functions) might be impacting your social life greatly either in your workplace or at school. So why not ensure that your body receives the proper nutrients to function to it’s fullest?

It is the perfect food. Most of us see Soylent and think about The Matrix, “…a single celled protein combined with synthetic aminos, vitamins, and minerals. Everything the body needs.”

Every year since 2009 I’ve done a 10-20 day liquid vegetable cleanse. It’s nice…really nice! I feel so good when it’s all over and most importantly, my taste-buds have reset where sugars and salts are so much stronger and my stomach capacity shrinks allowing me to be full with smaller meals. That reset doesn’t last too long and this January, I didn’t do my yearly reset. I can’t really say why, I just never got around to it.

I’m going to give Soylent a one-month chance. Well, a 2 week chance and then I’ll be ordering more of it and hopefully continuing it for as long as is possible.

There are a lot of 2-4 week trials of the product where the drinkers claim that all of their vitals are normal and unchanged except everyone experiences a drop in cholesterol, resting heart rate and small drops in weight. Not huge drops but more like a cleaner system where less water weight and ‘poo weight’ is overall about a 10 pound drop.

Soylent is open-sourced so the recipe list online is something anyone can recreate and improve upon. Soylent runs a recipe discussion site where users post recipes and get up voted and comments. There are ways to make Soylent into a butter like paste for easier and more interesting consumption and there are remixes, improvements and sharing of ideas. Soylent 1.0 is the current release version after being in ‘beta’ for over a year. Improvements are coming monthly to the base ’source code’ of what goes in. The great thing is, you don’t have to order from Soylent but I chose to because I’d only be saving 30% to buy ingredients and make it myself.

It’s a pretty good list. Unfortunately, the Soylent from Soylent LLC is delayed for 12 weeks for new customers. That’s a long time to wait so I’m going to start with liquid diets in a different way in the mean-time and slowly get my body ready to switch over.

I do think this is the future and I’m excited to give it a shot. One thing I’ll be doing is adding protein powder to my Soylent and continuing my current vitamin regiment which is as follows:

  • Orange Triad Multivitamin w/ digestion & joint support (6 tabs per day)
  • CLA (2 tabs a day)
  • Fish Oil (4 tabs a day)
  • Testosterone booster mix (2 per day)

We’ll see how Soylent affects me and I’ll be sure to document it all here.
