Why I’ll never switch to Android

Here’s the thing about Android. I have a lot of people on and offline ask me why I’m so loyal to Apple and how I’m so blind to the face that “Android is better at everything”. In some cases, maybe and it honestly feels like most of the tech world is one-upping and leap frogging every 24 months. One company has an edge for a few months then another one comes along and has their edge and this just goes back and forth and it’ll be pretty expensive to keep up with whatever the best is at this moment that you sort of have to be happy with what you have.

The thing is, if you following a bi-yearly upgrade cycle with Apple, you’ll be pretty darn happy for the first year and that’s even if you feel like you always have to have the latest and greatest.

Why won’t I ever switch to Android?

Over the past year, as I’ve disabled all of my social media accounts except for this blog, Reddit and Meetup.com, I’ve also distanced myself from Google. Aside from my Adsense, YouTube and Google Voice accounts, I’m no longer a part of their ecosystem.

To use Android is to use Google. You login with your Google account and the phone adapts to you. It also tracks everything about you, not anonymously but fully and completely your identity is monitored for everything. There are ways to un-Google your Android but most of these involve Rooting the phone and opening it up to malware and vulnerabilities (similar to Jailbreaking your iPhone). If I used Gmail, Google Search, Groups, Discussions, Google+, Google Drive, Image storage and other services they offer, I might be more excited about going Android but since I don’t use any of those and want Google to know very little about me, I will be staying away from Android indefinitely.

If another phone OS comes along that’s not tied to Google or Apple and promises my identity is protected and anonymous and not sold to advertisers and their software and hardware is ahead of what Google and Apple have, I may consider switching. I just don’t see that happening any time soon.
