★ Homebrewing: Culturing Wild Yeast

The adventure continues! I saved dregs from all of the beers consumed during the Blueberry Beer Tasting that took place at my place a few weeks ago. All of the dregs were placed into my girlfriend’s favorite Riedel wine glass and I covered it with saran wrap / plastic wrap. I then stuck that glass in my cellar for the past couple of weeks. I noticed today, some things are starting to happen!

Now, I have to do some research and figure out how to store this properly so my beet closet / cellar doesn’t get infected with wild bacteria and possibly mess up the standard controlled fermentations I have going. It’s totally a possibility. I’ve heard you can use a Mason Jar and seal it tight. Either way, it’s pretty cool to see these little guys going just in the dregs that were saved!

  1. Looks about right for a nice wild funky stuff culture.  Lacto maybe?  Not sure.  It’s funny how something that looks so disgusting can make a beverage that tastes so interesting and complex.
