★ Overcomplicating Technology

After reading this piece, I sent the following to my father:

“Dad, I’m glad to have picked a career where simplifying processes and navigating acronyms is something I’m good at and can get paid for. Although, it makes me think that only 1% of us actually get this stuff and can get through the buzz words into products that we can actually understand. Most of the population walks into a Best Buy and leaves more confused than when they entered after spending $499 on a speaker system or Blu-Ra player”

I think it’s sad that we need thousands of gadget blogs to get through the multiple product headlines that come through each day and even then, it takes people like us to read Gizmodo or Engadget and then make recommendations to our families as to what they should buy. The level of separation between some R&D room in Tokyo to my Dad’s home theatre system can be as much as 10 levels away. Things shouldn’t be this complicated.
