Technology: iMac, Made in America

New iMac - Core i7 5K - 27

My 27” iMac (2012 Core i7, Non-Retina) was assembled in USA using parts from all over the world (mostly China). The MacPro is made in USA as well. I was happy to see on my iMac Box for the 2015 Retina 5K model that it was also assembled in USA. The parts come from all over the world but my computer originated in San Jose California and shipped overnight across America to my doorstep. That makes me feel pretty good. I didn’t believe it though so I had to DuckDuckGo it and it appears Apple is still assembling iMacs in the good US of A. Go Apple.

Bernie Sanders:

“No, Apple is not destroying the fabric of America. But I do wish they’d be manufacturing some of their devices, here, in the United States rather than in China. And I do wish that they would not be trying to avoid paying their fair share of taxes.”

This comes up every few weeks. Apple builds millions of devices a year in America. They also pay all taxes required of them by federal law. Bernie needs to take on the IRS and our tax-code, not Apple. If Apple was doing something illegal, their executives would be in jail.

On the subject of manufacturing, nearly every company manufacturing hardware has said that American workers simply do not have the skills. China spent decades tooling & training for manufacturing and export. America did not. Vocational and trade school was relegated to a branding problem alongside the military. When I grew up, I was told “Only dumb people go to votech” (vocational / technical school) and they’d alternate military with votech from time to time. The truth is, Having a trade or entering the military wasn’t a bad idea for many people. The same adults in my life told me to go to college which I ignored.

My point is, when having a trade is considering failing versus having a Masters Degree, it leads to a country that isn’t known for its manufacturing prowess anymore. Apple has said, “If we can build a million iPhones a week in USA, we’ll bring manufacturing here”. I believe Tim Cook when he says the infrastructure and people just aren’t here for it.
