Many Twitter users have noticed that Twitter is now inserting tweets into their timelines that seemingly don’t belong. This is not an accident. Twitter has updated its help document, “What’s a Twitter timeline?”
If I was still using Twitter, consider this the final straw. I know how unpopular freemium is in web-apps like Twitter but I think the community has so much value and I’d pay extra to not have ads with additional features. Users of Twitter deserve to be the customers of Twitter, not advertisers.
When you step back and look at everything going on with Twitter, it’s a very disappointing state and even more disappointing that App.net couldn’t succeed in the wake of a huge community of users that are sick of Twitter.
They’re [Twitter] not obsessed with messing with developers’ heads — we’re just innocent bystanders getting hit whenever this fundamentally insecure, jealous, unstable company changes direction, which happens every few years. Twitter is never happy being Twitter, and it seems at times that its leadership doesn’t realize or doesn’t value what makes it so great. (Ever wonder why there’s so much leadership turnover?) And they’re now under the financial pressures of being a high-profile public company. It’s a powder keg.
They’ve lost developer support, the indy support and the support of their core fanatical customers. They’re profitable as Hell so I guess that’s something.
