The MUG Event Calendar for 2024 starts off slow but steady as two groups in Florida lead the charge. One will be discussing “decluttering your photo life”, something we all need to do. The other will focus on the new features of macOS 14 Sonoma.
Thanks to all the groups who regularly send in their meeting announcements. If you would like to see yours in our weekly Briefing, put a note on your schedule for the first of the month and email the details to The MUG Center.
I need to take a minute to give a shout out to Chuck Joiner. Chuck has been an advocate for Macintosh User Groups since as long as I can remember. Mug Center archives go back to 2006 which is Post-OS X but pre-iPhone and all that has come since in the world of technology. In 2006, Mac User Groups were dying. When Macworld ceased to exist, a most of the MUG community went with it. Apple Stores, Forums and Facebook took most of the steam out of why MUGs needed to exist. I was very involved with MUGs early on because even though I had the Internet, MUGs were how I found my people. I’ve made friends I still talk to through the user groups. They pre-dated most modern Mac forums.
Chuck has been publishing the Mug Event Calendar now for almost 20 years.
In addition, he’s been publishing Mac Voices since May of 2001 (around the time Mac OS X 10.1 came out. In fact, Chuck has been at it so long, the episode at Macworld San Francisco 2007 with me is still on his archives. I had yet to squash my Florida accent and was still talking with my native tongue back then.
Post-Publish Edit: It seems the MP3 on MacVoices for Episode 706 is gone and Chuck’s RSS feed doesn’t go back that far so thanks to me being a digital hoarder, I’m uploading the 2007 MP3 from my Synology NAS of the interview. I hope chuck doesn’t mind. (MacVoices #706 1/11/07)
Chuck’s undying commitment to what I’d consider “Apple Fans” in the traditional sense as in lovers and users of Macintosh computers is unwavering. One day, he’ll hang it up but I’m so glad he’s still publishing both Mug Center & Mac Voices. Thanks Chuck for everything. Photo below is from the MacVoices Flickr account of me almost 20 years ago.
