On a regularly scheduled weekend dirt bike ride out into the woods of Vermont, we came across Post Mills Airport home of the Post Mills Soaring Club and Brian Boland’s Museum of Curiosities. Brian is known for his hand-made hot air balloons but he has also done some other cool stuff with the property. There is a collection of various flying things that generally get strapped to a hot air ballon but some have their own props for directional travel. There’s a homemade double decker bus, old motorcycles, cars, wicker baskets, a polaroid collection, beer bottles going back decades and a row of barber chairs for watching the planes & gliders take off.
Then there’s Vermontasaurus a volunteer built dinosaur that hangs 25 feet over the ground. It did collapse at some point and parts of it were re-built. From certain angles, it looks like a dinosaur and from others, it just looks like a scrap of wood ready to be burned.
Tor really complete the picture, there’s also a piano ready to be played to set the mood as you see gliders & small airplanes take off and land. It’s sort of this weird magical place close to my home and just one of those cool Vermont things. The entire life-blood of this project is Brian himself and his special nature of being super creative and it brings me back to the fond memories I had hanging out with Burners in the Bay Area. He’d do well on the west coast but Vermont is lucky to have him.
