I imagine every step of the development of the Wirecutter/Sweethome was about people laughing at Brian. You can’t build a tech site that doesn’t publish 20 times a day. You can’t build a content site that isn’t covered with advertising. You can’t build an entire business on Amazon affiliate revenue. You can’t take on Consumer Reports and expect to get any traction. You can’t pay for this level of in-depth reporting. Ok, great, you built this, but why would anyone ever come back?
Brian Lam and I never met although we had some similar circles and I was in his presence a few times w/o formally saying hello. I wrote this post back in July of 2010. https://adamchandler.me/blog/2010/07/30/why-i-no-longer-read-gawker-blogs/
In it, I complained about Gizmodo’s RSS feeds and Brian commented on the post within an hour and emailed me as well a link to the full RSS feed. I’ve stopped dreading a lot of blogs who don’t publish full RSS feeds and while my blog is still not on anyone’s radar, the fact that the editor for Gizmodo found my post and emailed me to make it right..wow.
My point in writing this is because even when he’s not an owner or partner in something, he is going 110%. I’m stoked he has made this incredible self-funded site a brilliant multi-million dollar exit.
