The majority of my time on the road is heading to beer events. Breweries, Festivals, Tastings, etc.
With that said, I bought a bike where the original owner had paid quite a bit extra for luggage racks. This is great because I believe new these cost $1500 for the set (the same as wha people spend on just their used bike) but for long trips, they’re incredibly important, just as much as my 450 mile range per tank.
Anyway, the issue with these isn’t that they’re waterproof, it’s that they are metal and when I’m going to a tasting and have a bottle-conditioned beer (aka full of yeast sediment), I want the bottles to be upright and I don’t want the bottles to come in contact with metal. Wrapping the bottles up in a shirt would work but I really wanted added protection because on a long 3 hour ride, the bottles will be shaking slightly from the engine vibration and I don’t want to risk any breaks.
So, I grabbed some flooring material that is $25 for 6×8 of it from Home Depot. It’s designed to go under hard-wood flooring but I basically cut this into squares and duct-taped it to the body of the case. I’m not certain it will hold so I only did 2 of the 3 luggage boxes and we’ll see how it goes!
