Linked: “Tying the Knot in the Age of Marriage 2.0”

via Wedded Abyss:

Marriage today is a temporary union of two individuals where the exit costs are highly asymmetrical. What does that mean? It means that upon the dissolution of the marriage, one spouse generally makes off like a bandit, while the other is pushed into a life of unending poverty, abridged civil rights, and being two paychecks away from arrears, contempt, and prison.

A bleak statement that doesn’t apply to a quarter of the marriages but, to the majority it does seem like the current reality especially if you’re young and live in a city where your earning potential is not quite realized and you have choices.

I have issue with some of the things said but I like this pre-marriage perspective. If you’re going to get married, give this a read for a bit of perspective. Many people will be married for life. Most will not. For those that do get a divorce, these are some things you should know about.
