Thoughts: Apple Watch, iOS 8.3 and CarPlay

Something that no one has really pieced together yet is how Apple has basically created something amazing and satisfied an issue since the days of the beeper / pager which is distracted drivers cause more accidents.

Assuming you’re lucky enough to have CarPlay support in your vehicle via the car-maker or an after-market unit, you have to plug your iPhone into the car’s Lightning cable which is usually in the glove-box or center-console meaning there are functions you can do on the head-unit and activating siri is nice but old fashioned people like me who don’t fully utilize Siri might be compelled to unplug the iPhone to email someone or check Instagram.

With iOS 8.3 (out today), you can now connect to CarPlay wirelessly over Bluetooth. No longer do you need to stash your phone away from sight. This still doesn’t settle the distracted driver issue. Those of us who grab an Apple Watch next week can control music playback on our iPhone, use Siri, send messages, glance at incoming emails and appointments all from our wrist, voice, etc.

By the end of this year, I think the ability to stow your phone away in the glove-box, have Car Play activated and do all non Car Play tasks via our wrist (as much as you should do while operating a vehicle) means you’ll never miss a notification on your drive to work yet still be able to use Car Play while the iPhone is charging.

This all assumes you have the cash for a CarPlay Unit, iPhone 6 and Apple Watch but, in 5 years these will be common among most people and we’ll be living in the future. Dick Tracey style.
