Against the Grain / De Molen Bo & Luke

Rushed photo, great beer. I actually hate smoked beers with a passion so I’m glad that this was split 4 ways but, for a smoked beer, I had my glass and then poured another. The bourbon helped off-set the smoky charcoal notes but I probably couldn’t drink more than 40% of this bottle. Beers in 75CL format that are over 10% ABV should be criminal. My tolerance is at a point where I can almost finish a Black Tuesday by myself but it’s not healthy and shouldn’t be encouraged. The health issues are enormous as your liver and sugar processing is working over time while the amount of sugar and liquor are consumed. Anyway, nice beer and everyone at the tasting enjoyed it.

Pours a light brown, minor head holy smoke nose. like a campfire Taste is nice. Vanilla, coconut and toffee. the smoke is nice but not overpowering. really a nice beer. the booze is totally hidden. hints of chocolate
Here’s my buddy’s notes that add a bit more depth to my fatigued palate:

750 ml bottle. Nice oily sheen on top of the stout. On a swirl of the snifter it leaves an oily film over the glass. Nose is light smoke malt, alcohol and chocolate malts. Flavor is light smoked malt, chocolate cake, vanilla oak, molasses and some toasted barely. Texture is oily. This a great sipping beer. The smoked malt is subtle and doesn’t overpower the other flavors in the stout. I cant comment on the Pappy Van Winkle barrel because I have never had it straight. however, The whiskey is a light nuance. Nice stuff.
