★ Travel: Perhaps the greatest cheese I’ve ever had

Edam Jackson, living that cheesy lifestyle but it’s so gouda! While at Cantillon on Saturday, I encountered a 2 pound piece of cheese. It was 8,50 Euro and just said “cheese” on the clear plastic wrap followed by a word I could not pronounced. It could have meant “Washed Cheese” which is happening a lot at breweries like Chimay and Orval cheese is pretty common in grocery stores around Belgium. I ignored it. 8,50 Euro is around $13 so I decided to pass but I’m wishing I hadn’t.

Two days later, at a beer tasting in Ghent, my new friend Dylan (Kraddel on RateBeer) brought the same cheese. He unwrapped the stinky slimy cheese rind to reveal the soft delicate white cheese below. The cheese itself was good but not my favorite. However, it was washed and somehow full of Cantillon Gueuze as if the gueuze had been used both in the making of and washing the cheese. I’m no scientist so I’ll just take his word for it.

It tasted like I was eating Gueuze. Pretty amazing and only sold at the brewery and a few times a year. If you see a block of cheese at the brewery, buy it. Wow!
