This was a bummer to wake up to this morning. 5 gallons of wort was on the floor. It was the batch I brewed last night. I don’t bang my carboys up but this was bound to happen eventually. Time to switch to plastic. Luckily, it was a cheap batch. 5% Hefeweizen with a pound of honey. Not much to it.
Cleaning the mess up was no fun.
EXACTLY the reason I never have owned a glass carboy…I LOVE my better bottles…have a bunch, 5 and 6 gallon, ported and un-ported…but I usually only use them for meads and apfelwein now…I tend to ferment in my “no chill” cubes now with blow off tubes. I use these (6 gallon): http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=23285&catid=0&clickid=popcorn
with these inserts for the blow off tube: http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=34403&catid=669
Yeah, I’ve heard all of the horror stories. I started buying plastic carboys a few months back and have 2 now..but still have 4 glass ones. This is a sad day.
BetterBottles are your friend. I have five and only use glass for long-term sour beer aging.
