★ Review: Stone Imperial Russian Stout (2008 Vintage) versus Olde English 800

Stone 2008 Imperial Russian Stout versus Olde English 800

I did a joking post a while ago comparing two beers that were clearly in different leagues and categories. It was a joke or at least I thought others would think it was. Our old buddy Mike left a nice comment on it because he’s a funny guy and likes to be funny. I got a few messages privately from well intentioned friends asking if I was completely serious about comparing Cantillon Gueuze with some random White Birch beer. No, I wasn’t serious. Well, this below is a joke post. It’s a post intended as entertainment. These beers are not in the same league so please no hate-mails this time. I get enough of those anyway.

2008 Vintage. Enjoyed at 60 Degrees in a wine goblet on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Surprised I haven’t had this one yet.

A – Poured an almost black in to the glass. In the glass, pitch black, minor hints of heady that sticks around for a while.

S – I can smell this from 2 feet away. Always a good sign. roast, nutty, chocolates and coffee. Some vanilla as well.

T – This is spectacular. Alright, big chocolate up front. This is followed by vanilla bean and toffee. Caramel chocolate candies and some burnt barley malts on the back end with a hint of smokiness.

M – 40% carbonation on the mouth swish. Heavy body. Lingering roasted and smoked taste.

O – This is the king. There are better stouts that I’ve had with Dark Lord and Damon being my top but, for the price and availability, this is a king of stouts.

Served at fridge temp in Hill Farmstead Stemware. Gotta get my malt liquor category review.

A – Light golden orange. Hint of head that fades fast. Okay head lacing.

S – There’s this burnt malts scent. Sort of stale and old and very boring. I’m surprised though that there’s any smell at all.

T – There is no taste! It’s amazing. It’s this flat boring moldy tasting dirt tap water taste. It’s very bland and boring.

M – 5% carbonation on the mouth swish. Medium body.

O – This may be the worst beer I’ve ever tasted. It’s not even beer. It’s fermented toilet water.

  1. “There is no taste! It’s amazing. It’s this flat boring moldy tasting dirt tap water taste.” Do you type shit like this, lean back in your chair with your arms crossed, a smirk on your face, and just say, “yeah… that’s good writing!”?
