UPDATED: JUL 13, 2012 Struise Pannepot reserva ’07

A – 3 finger off white carb. Pitch black. SRM of 65? Hard to tell dark bear.

S – French oak, slight bourbon notes. Candy corns. Brown sugar and vanilla. Smells close to BCBS vanilla. Not fully though. Bourbon is very big.

T – Wow. Yeah. Big boozy taste. Hasn’t faded after so many years. Candy corns and sweet candies. Ice cream and flat Pepsi. I’m getting a hint of mocha. The tongue tingling booze is very special.

M – 70% carbonation. Heavy body. Boozy whiskey finish.

O – Wow. 100 a+. Holy crap. I have an ’05 and ’09-10 of this. Can’t wait to try these at home. The ’07 was remarkable!

UPDATE: ’05 Vintage had at home. 375ML (37.5CL) format in a Chimay Chalice.

half a finger, coffee coloured head. Still pitch black. Big mocha, nice hint of vanilla. Candy Corn and yeah, flat pepsi. Amazing that I still get those same scents. Taste: Actually, the ’05 I have has a bit metallic taste. The ’07 I had didn’t have this AT ALL. Finish is still the same as before with mocha, caramel, oak and vanilla. Mouthfeel is slightly less with the 2 years of time + oxidation having an effect on it. Overall: Wow. Still an absolutely amazing beer! One of THE best beers I’ve ever had. I continue to stand on the 4.7 rating yet, I bump it up to 4.8. The ’05 is different as in it’s a bit more mellow and more enjoyable to drink than the ’07 BUT I’m glad I didn’t sit on it any longer. ’07 was great and the ’05 was perfect but it has less edge than the ’07. Certainly falling off at this point.

  1. I was SO EXCITED when I found a bottle of this at Winooski Bev.  I think it was brewed in 2010, found in early 2012.  It was my first Pennepot.  I had both the reserve and the “standard” Pennepot.

I loved both, no doubt.  But they where just belgian quads in the end.  Nothing too special, nothing unique.  Rochefort 10 is much more widely available, and maybe even better.  How do you think the Pennepot series compares to Rochefort?
