A – Dark brownish red. Looks like a red maple syrup. 1-Finger off-tan head that barely subsides. Took 3 minutes to reduce head to a thin line.
S – Salty Maple? It’s very interesting. Sweet maple sap scent with a fruity finish.
T – Hmm. Up front it’s not bad. Starts with a sweet maple banana taste. The finish is totally a campfire. Semi-sweet then dry smoked taste with a bacon like finish. Tastes like charred Bacon. The start is so good but the finish is very weak.
M – 60% carbonation on the mouth swish. Very light body and disgusting finish.
O – I’m liking this beer but the finish is horendous. I have another bottle of this. Anyone want it?
I went on a beer trek to San Francisco last month and picked up a bottle of this to bring home. I found the aroma to be damn amazing. It smelled like maple, bacon, malt.. so good. But the taste… that was nothing like the aroma, unfortunately.
The taste was bland, hardly complex, and almost nothing like the aroma. It was too dry and flavorless to compete with the sweet delicious aroma. I actually tasted very little smoke malt in the beer, especially compared to one of my top 10 favorite beers, Schlenkerla Ur Bock.
Sounds like we had a similar experience. 7 for aroma, 4 for taste. I’m not a fan of smoked beers so didn’t give it huge marks in anything except for appearance asit does look very close to maple syrup. what else did you grab in SF?
A few bottles of Pliny, standard, a Heretic Evil Twin (awesome beer), and some RR Consecration and Supplication. Consecration is an amazing beer. If you haven’t had it, but I’m sure you have, it’s in my top 5 for sure. I like the Supplication, but I need to have a few more bottles before I make a final decision on it. I’ve had about five bottles of Consecration… it’s amazing. Going to be brewing up MoreBeer’s clone recipe soon.
Yeah, I pretty much went out there for Russian River and for Heratic. And also to see the city’s sights… I guess.. ;)
I found an Irish Bar/Curry House (apparently that’s a “thing” out there) that had three Heratic’s on tap… Evil Twin, Evil Cousin, and Shallow Grave Porter. Both where very good but nothing I can’t get here. Evil Twin however… very unique and delicious.
Sounds like an awesome trip! We’re headed to SF next month. Looking forward to some west coast beers.
