★ Review: Three for the price of one

I had three beers on wednesday so decided to do a triple review instead of waste your previous screen pixels or RSS readers from space.

Cigar City - Cucumber Saison

Cigar City Cucumber Saison

2.9

   AROMA 4/10   APPEARANCE 5/5   TASTE 5/10   PALATE 4/5   OVERALL 11/20

adamjackson (393) – Canaan, USA – JUN 27, 2012

Acquired this in a trade for some local beers. Poured into a white wine glass at fridge temp. 2012 Vintage.

A – Cloudy orange glow. SRM of 10. Solid white head with tiny bubbles of 3 fingers that subsides quickly.

S – Smells like a freaking salad. So bright and flowery like fresh cut carrots, cucumber and sunflower seeds. Mineral water. Little bit of lemon in here as well.

T – Hmm. Well, the start is actually pretty nice. Peppery dry saison taste with nice simple farmhouse style hit on the tongue. Then, this massive cucumber and iceberg lettuce comes through and it all goes down hill. Finish is lemon or grapefruit juice.

M – 80% carbonation. Medium body. Dry tangy cucumber and lemon taste.

O – I honestly don’t know. I certainly wouldn’t have it again. It’s not too refreshing really. I guess if you love cucumbers? IDK.

Picked this up at Meantime Brewery in Greenwich England. Poured into a wine glass.

A – pours a very light to medium brown. No head at all

S – Smells like a weak guinness. Light barley and malts. Hints of cocoa.

T – Chocolate upfront like cocoa beans and hints of vanilla. Very weird metallic taste like chewing on a penny.

M – 80% carbonation on the mouth swish. Light body.copper finish.

O – Not a pleasant experience. It’s alright and drinkable.

   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 5/5   TASTE 6/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 14/20

adamjackson (393) – Canaan, USA – JUN 27, 2012

Acquired in a trade with a Texas native. Stoked to try it. Served at cellar temp in a wine glass.

A – Gorgeous golden appearance with hints of darker golden brown. Very hazy and completely cloudy all through. 2-finger head of solid white tight bubbles that subsided very slowly to a single finger and remained. Very nice head lacing.

S – Smells nice. Dry farmhouse funky yeast scent with big citrus notes and peppery spices.

T – Upfront spice with orange peels and slight bitterness but quickly fading hopz. Very attic must like dusty and stuck like an old shoe but that didn’t stick around too long. The finish was lemon and peppers

M – 100% carbonation. light body.

O – This is pretty good. I was hoping for more but it’s not that bad.

  1. Cucumber Saison?  What is it about Saison that says “throw whatever the hell you want in me”. Hah.

  2. Drinking the Cucumber Saison as we speak. Horrid. An abomination of the style. I’m a local too, living only 2 hours from CCB, but damn – I’d drink their Guava Grove or Table Saison over this every day all day. Pisses me off that people on BA/RB rate this so high – when they let supply & demand guide their ratings and not their own palates.

    1. Well, this was a running joke this weekend. Anytime my friend and I rated a beer from the cellar higher than the current score, we jokingly chastised each other for “inflating trade value”

It’s a fun thing to think about but I doubt anyone does it intentionally. Buys a case of Cucumber saison…gives it 5/5 to get whales from it. I doubt this happens but it does make you think :)
