I asked my landlord to cancel my cable on May 1st. He’s going to cancel an $80 a month service including a DVR and a few HD channels with movies. I haven’t used my cable aside from when a few select shows appear (The office, it’s always sunny, the daily show, conan O’brien, etc). My TV choices are pretty random and all available on the web or on Hulu.
To be clear, this is why I bought my Boxee Box last October. It was supposed to bring Hulu & Netflix to my television and it has Flash so South Park & Late-Night TV that’s only available via the browser (not on Hulu) could be watched as well.
Hulu never came to Boxee and I’m still pissed about that.
Boxee is also an extremely unreliable system. It crashes every 5 hours as if it is running out of memory or something. I honestly don’t know what’s going on. The AppleTV 2 was a purchase I avoided making from when it was released in October to just this March. I’m bummed that I wanted so long to buy it.
AppleTV is where I spend nearly 100% of my time.
- Movies & Music from iTunes
- Netflix
- MLB.TV
- NBA.TV
- Renting Movies
- Airplaying content from my iPad / iPhone
I haven’t booted up the Boxee box in 3 weeks and that was to watch a Flash video from a web browser with some friends. The Boxee is close to being eBayed.
I’m bummed that Hulu Plus isn’t on AppleTV. Luckily, it’s coming to Xbox tomorrow and I’m so thrilled. For $7.99 for Hulu + $7.99 for Netflix, I have content on my iOS devices and home theatre system and I will no longer need cable. I’m not happy about booting up the Xbox when I want to watch TV but I’ll get over it.
I’ll talk more about this later but, if you have been holding out ditching cable and don’t have a Boxee, Sony Blu-ray player, Samsung TV, AppleTV or other device, Hulu may be what you need. Go to their site and make sure you like the selection first and then cancel the cable because $7.99 is much cheaper than $80 and I’m going to use the money I saved to increase my home Internet speed.
