Back in the day, I didn’t archive things like I do now. I do remember a date that forever shaped my life and that was March 21st, 2007. It was the day I joined Twitter.com. Little did I know March 21st, 2007 was the one year anniversary of Twitter. Of course, Twitter went live-ish before that and didn’t gain much traction until June/July but March 21st was the day that “Twttr” was released to the world.
Today is Twitter’s 5th birthday but it’s my fourth year on using the service as member number 1,786,041.
It’s amazing how much I used the service back then compared to now but when I jump in, I’m astonished at what it provides in return. If I need something, Twitter is there for me but really it’s the people and the service simply facilitates these connections. I’ve found jobs and gigs via Twitter, bought furniture, found apartments, bought cars, planned events and met amazing people via Twitter. We used to spend half of our time on Twitter complaining about Twitter having hiccups and fail whales and now people in the middle-east are using it to save their country. It’s pretty remarkable how far we’ve come with this small service.
Although I’m not the Twitter master I once was, I have a huge respect for its power and how much it has shaped my life. Happy birthday Twitter. Here’s to 5 more years!
