{"id":4682,"date":"2015-06-07T14:21:14","date_gmt":"2015-06-07T14:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adam-jackson.net\/blog\/?p=4682"},"modified":"2015-05-29T14:45:19","modified_gmt":"2015-05-29T14:45:19","slug":"linked-bots-thanking-bots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adamchandler.me\/blog\/2015\/06\/07\/linked-bots-thanking-bots\/","title":{"rendered":"Linked: &#8220;Bots Thanking Bots&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/500ish.com\/bots-thanking-bots-cdd467cdd18b\">via 500 words<\/a>: on Facebook\u2019s new feature that allows you to type 1 in the birthday box when someone is having a birthday and a bot automatically sends \u201cHappy Birthday!\u201d to them as you.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Which leads to the next question: at what point do bots start talking to bots? You know, why should you have to type \u201cthank you!\u201d when you can reply to a text with \u201c1\u201d? Or better yet, why should you have to type the \u201c1\u201d at all? If Facebook knows you want to say \u201cthank you\u201d to everyone (bots included) who wished you a happy birthday, shouldn\u2019t they just give you the option to let Facebook do that for you on your behalf?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Where this gets weird\u200a\u2014\u200aokay, even more weird\u200a\u2014\u200ais when you consider others who are looking at the profile page of the birthday boy\/gal. They\u2019ll see you leaving the \u201chappy birthday\u201d wish and they\u2019ll see the \u201cthank you\u201d reply, but they won\u2019t realize that what they\u2019re really watching is a sort of bot kabuki theater performance.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I enjoyed this one. Mostly because I\u2019ll link to any blog post about \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1798709\/\">Her<\/a>\u201d but because there\u2019s now this very tangible future where we\u2019re all logged in to Facebook on our VR headsets, we see our friends, we socialize with them but we do it all entirely through artificial intelligence. Our bots are interacting with their bots and we\u2019re just watching it like a TV show.<\/p>\n<p>A depressing future but very well visualized in the movie <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0986263\/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_28\">Surrogates<\/a>\u00a0but with the AI\/Bot angle.<span hidden class=\"__iawmlf-post-loop-links\"
