Want to see what a blogger who hates real cameras says about a real camera?

The title: The $800 Camera I Didn’t Use To Share My Hawaiian Vacation Photos

Before the trip, I thought that the hardest part of using the RX100 would be remembering to pack it

and

But those relatives didn’t even get to see those killer photos until we were back in California. Except for the few I explicitly forced myself to upload:

and

This is what paradise looked like three hours ago. pic.twitter.com/mq82cD3KnC

and

No, when it came down to it, we just couldn’t be bothered to bump two devices together. We’re lazy!

and

But until or unless most high-end compact cameras have their own cellular connectivity—yet another device to chew up your data plan—and all the popular sharing apps built right in, there’s still going to be a gap. Any hurdle is too big a hurdle when you’re trying to enjoy your vacation.

———-

In short, I’m the one in the wrong here. I don’t use Instagram or Twitter or Facebook or Snapchat or whatever the kids use these days. I take photos for a week, go home and edit these photos (minimally mostly just straightening and white-balance) and then I upload them to Flickr. Some go on my blog and I hope the readers here enjoy the photos I take.

The 2nd quote I lifted from the article about relatives not seeing their photos until the trip was over, give me a break! Let’s think about 1999 when you’d go on a vacation, you’d get home, wait 24 hours for prints to process on your 24 exposure film and then your relatives would see those pictures if you mailed duplicates or the next time you saw them at a family function. That was 15 years ago yes but I’m pretty sure my mom and dad are not going to go through many sleepless nights if they can’t see my vacation photo the moment that I see it. My family is not actually very keen on photos anyway but I really doubt the author’s family was that upset with a shot delay in seeing photos.

Are we really that broken that nothing that happened yesterday matters anymore? That feels so depressing to me. I even ignore breaking news and wait for a journalist I respect to take in all of the facts and report a week later on things than read a half-written article on CNN IReport or whatever they call it from a blogger.

My favorite films, television, photography and published works took time to be manufactured and I really don’t care what you’re doing right now and I’ll give one more reason for this…

Right now, 6 billion people are experiencing something that is unique to them and, given the right tools, they’d be able to share it with all of us. In one week, how many of them are going to recount this moment in time as significant…a month from now, a year from now even? One year from now if I ask everyone to recount what they were doing on Columbus day 2014, very few would remember and if they did remember, the memory may not be worth recounting or retelling. What I mean is, there are so many of us right now, we deserve to curate things a bit. I believe less people should post photos of their food or the sunset or what they’re doing right now. I take photos of everything I do but very few go online because I censor myself or, in a week’s time that moment was far less important than I thought it was at the time.

If more of us waited a few days to share our moments, we’d have a lot less BS in the world.

I’m glad true photography (well, as true as digital photography can be) hasn’t figured out the link to Instagram or Facebook yet. I’ll be buying real cameras for a long time and accept the fact that I’m in the minority.

via Gizmodo: (i’ve always hated linking to this blog) – Also, I’m going to link to some quotes…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
"_jetpack_featured_image_duplicate_dismissed":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[7

post-4270","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-linked","cs-entry","cs-video-wrap
Rob Griffiths: This is a comparison of a $349 camera released January of 2011 and a $1,000 camera released September of 2017.
