This is a big reason, according to this birdie, for why Apple Store Geniuses are excited about iCloud.

Backupophobes can get away with never touching iTunes after activating an iOS device. But folks obviously need to plug them into some kind of power source to recharge which, combined with a reachable WiFi network, is what triggers iCloud’s automatic backup feature. Sure, these customers can manually reinstall apps one by one from the store, but they have no way to recover any of their data or media purchased on the device. That holds true for contacts, too, if users didn’t sign up for MobileMe or even Google’s free (and, in my experience, terrible) contact sync.

I’m surprised to hear this number pegged so low at 50 percent (I assumed more users plugged into iTunes at least infrequently). If true though, I find it interesting that it is still much lower than just about any statistic you will hear about how many traditional computers users backup. People have been asking Apple to cut iOS’ umbilical cord for some time (and before the iPad), myself included. But I’m glad Apple waited until it had an automatic solution in place like iCloud.

As one Gizmodo Commenter Said:

50% brought to genius bar is not 50% of all iPhones

-just saying the assumption is based on people who have problems with their phone (brought in for service)… hardly surprised that 50% of people who had to bring it in didn’t sync.. it’s a good part of the reason they are there.

That’s a good point. The number of people that I know (excluding techies) that sync their iPhone once a month is slim. This is why iTunes automatically syncs your iPhone each time you plug it in and forces you to uncheck that option. It’s a VERY GOOD thing Apple keeps that checked. I’d assume this number would be smaller if Apple dropped the inclusion of a wall adapter in the box. Most people would be forced to plug in the iPhone.

However, the huge news here that no one has reported on:

This is a HUGE win for Android

iCloud is coming “this fall”. Android has been able to accomplish iCloud-like features for years. Google has won so far.

One FPS: A little birdie says that about 50 percent of Apple Store customers who need to get…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
"_jetpack_featured_image_duplicate_dismissed":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[7

post-2551","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-linked","cs-entry","cs-video-wrap
via Apple.com: Apple offers Volume Purchase Programs and Apple Configurator on Mac to help enterprise environments manage and mass-deploy apps on iOS devices.
