It could even compel iPhone users without computers to buy their first Mac.

and

Gurman also reports that there might be a lot of demand on launch day, with retail employees being warned that they may need to work longer hours – akin to what would happen on an iPhone launch day. There’ll also be ‘an entire table dedicated to one of the new products,’ likely the new low cost MacBook.

Today May 7th, Tim Culpan via MacRumors:

Culpan says that the runaway success of the entry-level laptop has left Apple paying more for the components inside it. As a result, he says new finishes are one option being weighed by Apple to keep enthusiasm high if those costs end up getting passed on to buyers. Starting at $599, the Neo is currently sold in Citrus, Blush, Indigo, and Silver.

Apple does not appear to have settled on which colors might join the lineup, and the report does not name any specific shades the company may be considering.

The pricing pressure is said to stem from Apple’s decision to dramatically scale up production. After Neo demand outstripped initial expectations, Apple has reportedly asked suppliers to prepare capacity for 10 million units of the debut model, up from an earlier target of 5 to 6 million.

The past 3 weeks has been non-stop rumors about how Apple is having a crisis over this new breakthrough product. This is the same company that moves 250 million iPhones every year and they’re struggling with a device that exceeded 10 million?

People really are giving Apple way too much doubt here to think that Apple really doesn’t have enough A18 SOCs or enough solid state flash storage? You don’t think Apple had a plan all along to release this and do a speed bump when supplies dwindled? Apple was giving their operations and retail teams a heads up that this was going to be a hugely successful product and now is scrambling that the product was a huge success? Give me a break.

Either Apple has supply chain issues for this new product that is produced at 5% the capacity of iPhone OR this was always the plan to release the A18 model first and for back-to-school, release new colors and a speed bump.

The other rumor on Macrumors:

Culpan says cutting the entry-level 256GB model is among the options Apple is weighing as component costs climb. Such a move would push the Neo’s effective starting price up by $100 without raising the price of any individual configuration.

I think Apple LOVES the $499 education starting price and I doubt in 2026 that this model is going to go away. I said it a few weeks ago but consumer services revenue from a MacBook Neo purchase is the star here. Within 2 years of buying the machine, most Apple One subscribers will have paid Apple 1 MacBook Neo worth of high-margin subscription revenue. Don’t discount that Apple is not going to lose margin but also know that services is giving them a lot of leeway on how they price machines. A $329 iPad and a $499 Neo are getting in the customer’s hands so they can be used a services revenue drivers.

March 1st, 2026, Mark Gurman via 9to5Mac: Internally, the low-end MacBook is being described as an “incredible value,”…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
{"0":"post-14755","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"cs-entry","7":"cs-video-wrap
Digitimes (they're usually completely wrong): The Taiwan-based supply chain for Apple products will begin shipments of new 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch MacBook Air models featuring Sandy Bridge platform and Thunderbolt interface in late May for launch in June or July, according to makers in the supply chain.
